“Do You Have A GPS for your business?”

As a business consultant have I visited many offices and seen business fail do to their leaders lack of vision, ethics, character, and systems. These things are the core of any business in order for it to be successful. Many businesses are not just failing because of today’s economic situation. There are businesses that are doing very well today, especially those that are system oriented. Systems complement the efforts of a team, rather than conflict with them. One system CBO’s (Christian Business Owners) can not operate without is a GPS (God’s Prosperity System). A GPS will show you things to come, how to avoid delays, and what time you should reach your destination.

Over the next few issues I will outline various keys to help you be the best at what you are called to do. This system will help you keep on track by managing your business and others effectively. One of the major causes of why businesses are failing is due to a lack of leadership. Business need effective (anointed) leaders in order prosper. It’s a proven fact that with an effective leader a business can maintain stability and even growth during famine. A perfect example would be Joseph. As I visit business’s that are doing well many of them have a leader with a Joseph type of anointing. Some of them don’t realize it because they think it’s their intellect or education. However, those things only help very little during famish times. Stewardship is a gift given by God. If you find a good Steward, hold on to them. In today’s times it takes an anointed steward to manage effectively with resources far greater than intellect, education, and even past experiences. That main resource is known as the Holy Spirit. (See: John 16:13 …and He shall shew you things to come.)

The 6 C’s every business leader must do:

1. Counsel: As a leader you have the right or have been given authority to counsel those under your authority. This is a very important step not only in the hiring process, but throughout your working relationship with staff. Without proper counsel you can not expect staff to know what their expectations are. Noah Webster 128 American Dictionary states: to advise, instruct, admonish, and to advise another in regard to his future conduct and measures.
2. Confronts: Every leader must be able to confront situations as they arise in business. Confrontation is not a bad thing. It’s something that has to be done and done with love. In my career as a supervisor there have been employees that I had to let go. However, when it was done out of a loving heart it ended well and those very same people that I let go still keep in touch with me.
3. Comforts: Many leaders today focus mainly on one or two of these areas discussed. The world’s way of doing business is to mainly deal with convicting and confronting. If you are lucky, you might get correction or counseling before they fire you. The thing that sets the Christian Business Leader (Steward) apart is that he or she knows through the spirit when to be a comforter. It ministers to staff when they are able to see you as a comforter and not a tyrant. It makes the work atmosphere a pleasant place to be and staff are able to be more efficient knowing that there boss cares about them. Isn’t it nice to know that God cares about you and the job that you are doing? (See 2 Chronicles 32:6)
4. Corrects: Because God loves us he corrects us. Correction helps keep staff on track and focused on the goal at hand. A staff member that can take correction is a staff member that is teachable. And you want teachable staff members. As leaders we don’t correct people to condemn them. We correct them so that they can get it right. I have visited offices and watched owners and supervisors watch an employee doing something wrong and say nothing. Never make that mistake. Most of the time it was fears keeping them from saying something. “Well he/she has been here for years” or “He/she will not train anyone and therefore he/she is the only one that can do it” or “They might sue me” or “That’s family”. All these statements are fear based and will keep your business from being all that God has called it to be. Correction is a good thing. (See Proverbs 3:11)
5. Convicts: To convict someone is to release someone. When you don’t convict people under your authority, you keep them in bondage making them be less than what God has called them to be. And that doesn’t help your business. means to reprove, rebuke, convince, “tell (one’s) fault”, refute, confute, to bring to light, to expose, correct, admonish, demand an explanation, and to punish are some of the terms used in Strong’s Concordance. “And again he stooped down, and wrote on the ground. And they which heard it, being convicted by their own conscience, went out one by one, beginning at the eldest, even unto the last:” John 8:8-11KJV Employees will not feel convicted until you say something. It’s your job to say something and not be an idle boss. You are the salt of the earth. Don’t assume that people know better. One of the things Jesus did was write it down and spoke it. And that’s when conviction came. You must have written guidelines for your staff or they will not have anything to be convicted by. [See Proverbs 29:18-19 Amplified] Owners or leaders must convict with love. We know that the love of God leads man to repent. Once you have convicted them with love, they must do the sixth and final step. And that is:

6. Confess: Once you have followed these steps as a leader in the workplace it is important that a worker confess their mistake. After you have counseled, confronted, comforted, corrected, and convicted a worker and they don’t confess their wrong. You must let them go. I don’t care if it’s your mother, sister, brother, or even your spouse. Find another position for them somewhere else. If` you don’t your business will fail. Confession isn’t just for your staff, it is for you. You’re the head. Good gave you the vision, not them. They must follow suite. But if you have not been acting in your role that may be one of the primary reasons your business is having problems. If that is the case and you have not been implementing the six C’s. You must confess/repent. When you do this God will restore your business. It starts with you first. “If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land.” [II Chro. 7:14] Your land is your business. This scripture is the key to God’s Prosperity System (GPS).

If you feel that you do not have the ability to implement these six steps, you must delegate that responsibility to someone else. Leaders must learn how to delegate. These steps are not only ways that God relates with us in our relationship with him. It is the way we must also relate to our staff. We are made in His image and must walk in our authority as believers, leaders, stewards, employees, and employers. In order for you to flow effectively with your GPS you must have faith in the implemented system and not your feelings.

Faith or Feelings

This is a whole topic in it’s self and a topic I will deal with in future discussions. However, you can not allow your feelings to manage your business totally. That’s especially the case for Christian Business Owner’s (CBO’s). I have personally watched owners make decisions that have cost them money, relationships, and even their business. If you have a written office policy you must abide by it for everyone. There is a difference between favor and favoritism. I will deal with that topic later as well. As a CBO you must be lead by the Spirit. Get up early, seek God’s direction for your business, and pray for your employees. Ask Him, seek Him, listen to Him, and you will have the results you need to be the head in your industry and not the tale. When using your GPS don’t be lead by your past experiences or feelings. If you do you will get off track and reaching your goals will take much longer and cost you more. As you have faith in your GPS and be lead by the Spirit it will help keep your business on the right track. Remember! God cares about you and your business don’t separate them. “For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, says the Lord, thoughts of peace and not of evil, to give you a future and a hope.” Jeremiah 29:11 NKJV

Question!
When is a train free? Is it free when it is on the track or off the track?

"Owners must write the vision and make it plain."

"A written company policy, human resources, and the owners vision is very important."
Your vision, goals, and character beliefs must be conveyed to your staff. How can you, your staff or partners move forward together in business unless you are in agreement.
When owners hold their staff to standards, policies, or character beliefs that are not conveyed it creates conflict in the workplace.
As you can see in today's business world with upper level leadership. When those in authority don't lead with character and integrity companies simply fail. It doesn't matter how large or small your company is. Character will take your business future than money.
Yesterdays business tactics are out the door. Things must be done differently. I believe that having the right systems in place are very important. However, having the right (leaders) employees in place is more important. Those leaders must be trained properly in order for your company to grow successfully.
As an owner, manager, or leader we have an obligation to train staff not just on systems, but on leadership and character principles. That's how companies truly grow.

If you are interested in properly training yourself or staff to take your business to the next level, please contact me immediately. Remember! Delayed obedience is disobedience!
